A few months ago I wrote, perhaps a bit prematurely, about how to solve some problems I was having with the ProtonVPN app on Linux (and the free plan). The solution proposed there was to move away from the app to use an OpenVPN configuration file they provide, and some other tweaks needed to avoid IP leaks. And I said prematurely because, although it worked, almost every time I wanted to connect it asked me for my password from 4 to 5 times, and some times it won’t connect at all.

A few days ago I was looking at their website to check if there were some updates on the Linux app for the service, and for my surprise, it was. They have redesigned the app, and probably have made some improvements under the hood, so I went all in to give it a try.

Old certificate

Because I had the ProtonVPN installed in the past, the certificate for their repository was expired. This means that every time I tried to install the app it told me… that precisely: the certificate is expired.

I found how to solve this in a discussion on Fedora. So now I was able to install the app following the guide for Fedora.

Is it working?

Nop, it is not. From time to time the connection drops, similarly to what it used to do those few months ago. I have experienced this drop in connection when watching movies, when reading posts, and even now, writing this. What can you do?… you know what they say, you only get what you pay for.
