Zotero is a free software¹ whose main functionality is the collection, organization, management and use of bibliographic citations.

Zotero provides an extension for web browsers that allows, provided an instance of it exists active, send the current page from the browser directly to the last active collection in Zotero. Besides, the extension is able to recognize if the content of the web page is a scientific article, a book, etc.

Recently, while installing Zotero Connector on the Brave web browser, I ran into a problem. Despite the Zotero icon was present in the browser extensions area, it did not work when clicking on it.

Solution

The problem is that Brave blocks the local address that Zotero uses to communicate with the extension. To find out if this is the specific problem you are experiencing, you can access the address http://127.0.0.1:23119/connector/ping with an active instance of Zotero running. In the event that there is communication, a sign will appear indicating that Zotero is running, and as a consequence there has been communication between the two, so the error should not then be related to this topic. In the case that there is no communication, then the solution is as simple as adding an exception to the filters used by Brave. To do this, the exception @@127.0.0.1:23119 must be included in the exception list. filters, save changes, and it should work.
